Meet the Tarot Queens | Six Original Feminine Paintings Inspired by Tarot

I have been pulling one tarot card every morning for almost six years.

It’s become a ritual that I have before I start the day. A cup of tea, a journal and a card.

Whenever the queens visit me I always feel a jolt of excitement.

They don’t just offer guidance, the have a message that may sometimes be gentle, sometimes with a knowing nudge. And sometimes, if I am honest, a loving slap.

But they always have a message that I need to hear.

THE BEGINNING.

This collection began one morning in February, when I pulled the Empress .

This morning the card felt like a reminder that there is a Queen within every one, and the idea stayed with me.

The Queens in tarot represent powerful feminine archetypes. They are guides that show us different ways of being in the world. They remind us to stand in our own sovereignty, to trust ourselves, and to lead our lives with compassion, courage, intuition and truth.

And this is how I want to live my life. Not perfectly but consciously.

MEET THE QUEENS

THE HIGH PRIESTESS:

The High Priestess reminds us that the answers we seek are rarely found outside ourselves. She is the keeper of mysteries, inviting us to trust our intuition, honour our inner voice and embrace the magic of stillness.

Symbols: pomegranate, crossed keys, sacred books, temple of Isis, horned moon tiara

She is:
Quiet wisdom. Deep Knowing. Sacred intuition.

THE EMPRESS:

The Empress embodies abundance, creativity, beauty and nurturing energy.

She reminds us to create with our whole hearts, care for ourselves deeply and trust in life’s natural cycles of growth.

Symbols: Venus, heart, twelve stars, lilies

She is:
Abundance. Nurturing. Creativity

THE QUEEN OF WANDS:

The Queen of Wands is bold, joyful and unapologetically herself. She encourages us to step into our own light and pursue what sets our soul on fire.

Symbols: wand, lions, black cat, sunflowers, crown of flame

She is:
Confidence. Passion. Creative fire.

THE QUEEN OF CUPS:

The Queen of Cups leads with kindness while remaining deeply connected to her own intuition. She reminds us that softness can be one of our greatest strengths.

Symbols: cup, shells, flowing water

She is:
Empathy. Intuition. Healing.

THE QUEEN OF SWORDS:

The Queen of Swords reminds us to honour our truth, communicate with honesty and trust our own judgement.

Symbols: wind, clouds, lone bird, upright sword

She is:
Truth. Clarity. Wisdom.

THE QUEEN OF PENTACLES:

The Queen of Pentacles nurtures both dreams and practical realities. She reminds us that abundance grows through love, care and steady devotion.

Symbols: pentacle, plants, rabbit, ibex

She is:
Abundance. Home. Grounded wisdom.

THE MAKING OF THE QUEENS:

When I first began this collection, I did all the research, sketched the ideas, and then promptly got stuck.

I couldn’t decide what size they should be, what surface they belonged on, or even how I wanted to paint them.

So, like many creative ideas, they quietly waited.

Then one afternoon I discovered a forgotten stack of 15 × 15 cm wooden panels tucked away in the studio cupboard, and suddenly everything clicked into place.

Sometimes paintings simply know when they’re ready.

Unlike some of my recent paintings (I’m looking at you, Braver!), this collection flowed from beginning to end. Every Queen seemed to arrive exactly as she wanted to be, and I absolutely love how vibrant, joyful and quietly powerful they became.

Which Queen is calling you?

From my whimsy world to yours.
