5 Daily Creative Rituals for Focus & Flow (Artist Studio Routine)

FIVE TINY RITUALS TO BRING YOU BACK TO YOURSELF LILLIBEAN DESIGNS KIRSTIN MCCULLOCH

There’s something I’ve come to understand about myself over the years, and that is I am a rituals person.

From a very early age, my life has been built on routines. And if I’m honest, I don’t think I would have made it through school without them. Not high school. Not my HSC. And definitely not university, which is when those rituals slipped, and everything felt a whole lot harder

It wasn’t until walking alongside one of our kids through an ADHD diagnosis that something really resonated with me.

We were talking about executive function challenges like time blindness, starting ten things and finishing two, forgetting appointments, being chronically late, and chasing the dopamine hit of a new idea.

I sat there thinking… oh, Hello. That’s me.

And suddenly, my need for rituals wasn’t a regimented, narrow way of living or a flaw; they were a lifeline.

Without them, I’d drift, moving from one thing to another without landing.

But with them, there’s flow, ease and space for creativity to arrive.

So I thought I’d share a little behind-the-scenes of my studio life, the tiny rituals that hold me, ground me, and gently bring me back to myself each day.

1. The Sunday Reset (A Soft Start to the Week)

Every Sunday afternoon, I spend about half an hour setting up my week.

Nothing fancy.

I look at my diary.
I pull an oracle card for the week.
I map out my to-do list, making sure each day has at least one clear focus.

Because if I don’t? That “what should I be doing?” feeling creeps in, and suddenly I’m overwhelmed before I’ve even started.

I also take a few minutes to reset the studio – tidying up after the week, clearing my desks, emptying the bins, refresh my candles

So when I walk in on Monday morning, it feels calm, clear and ready.

(A future goal is to shift this to Friday afternoons, but for now, Sunday still holds me.)

2. The Morning Walk (Before the World Begins)

Before I am mum, before I am an artist and before I am anything for anyone else – I walk.

Just 20–30 minutes in the early morning.

There’s something about being outside – the quiet, the stillness, the feeling of grounding that soothes my soul.

There is peace. There is beauty. And ideas come here.

And honestly, I notice the difference on the days I skip it.

3. Journaling, Cards & Tiny Resets

After the morning rush (breakfast, school prep, all the life things), I come back to myself again.

Morning pages.
A tarot card.
A quick 10-minute tidy of the house.

This is the bridge between “mum mode” and “studio mode.”

It doesn’t take long, but it makes the transition much smoother.

4. Lighting the Candle (A Creative Threshold)

When I walk into my studio, I don’t just start working.

I make a cup of tea.
I take a breath.
And I light a candle.

Every single time.

Sometimes is a beautifully scented candle from a fellow creator, one I have onointed in herbs and scents or a simple tea light.

It’s such a small act, but my brain knows what it means.

We’re in the studio now and we’re working. We’re creating.

5. Music, Layers & Letting Myself Focus

This one always makes people laugh…or look at me as if I have a few screws loose.

I work with music playing in the background and something else through headphones.

A podcast. A show. An audiobook.

It sounds chaotic, but for my brain? It’s magic.

It gives just enough stimulation that I can actually focus.

Without it, everything seems to take ten times longer.

6. Other small changes

I’ve also made small changes to reduce decision fatigue (Goddess, we make so many decisions!) I’ll eat the same lunch all week, decide on Sunday what each day’s focus is going to be and know three things that I will do first: I put my keys and sunglasses in the exact same spot every time I come home, and I have a family calendar on my phone with reminders set 10 minutes before.

So I don’t have to think about these things. So my life is easier.

Because creativity needs space and sometimes that space comes from removing tiny, unnecessary decisions.

So my five tiny rituals,
✨ A Sunday reset to set the week,
✨ A morning walk to gently meet the day,
✨ Journaling, oracles, and small tasks to transition the day
✨ Lighting a candle to begin work
✨ Music and removing decision fatigue,

Are not big or complicated.

But they create a life that feels easier, clearer, and more creative.

If you’ve been feeling scattered, overwhelmed or a little disconnected from yourself, what small rituals or routines could you add to your day?

Maybe don’t try to change everything – just begin with one small ritual.

Light a candle. Go for a walk. Pull a card.

And see what shifts.

And if you’d like a little guidance along the way, I share soul whispers, rituals, and behind-the-scenes studio life in my newsletter and would love it if you joined it.

From my whimsy world to yours.
